About the Course

This course is an introduction to the developmental characteristics and needs of children ages 3-6. It supports understanding of this developmental stage for parents, caregivers, school staff, or any individual seeking general knowledge about Montessori developmental theory and education. The Assistants Adjunct component helps further prepare the adult to assist in a 3-6 Montessori classroom.

Course Objectives

To gain general knowledge of the Montessori approach to childhood development and education To explore how an adult can best support optimal development for this age group in any environment and as needed, to identify and remove obstacles to optimal development To understand the unique nature of the 3-6-year old child’s mind, the powers for development active at this stage, and the needs and characteristics of children at this stage of development To understand the general importance of Observation as a basis for providing developmental support of 3-6-year-old children in any environment To understand the role of an assistant in a 3-6 Montessori environment; to support the children and create a successful partnership with the lead adult (an AMI diploma holder)

Course Delivery Language

All components of the course will be delivered in English language. Support will be provided in Tamil. Participants will be required to read some passages / chapters from Montessori books; take down notes from lectures; write original essays and other assignments in English.

A laptop / smartphone, earphones Access to internet, scanning and printing facilities Basic Computer skills Participants will need adequate tech skills to navigate and utilize the virtual environment prepared with resources for their learning, and assignment submissions Zoom for sessions Google Drive for Reading Materials & Assignment Submissions

Course Requirements to Obtain Certificate

90% attendance of Synchronous sessions. Participation in class discussions & activities based on Asynchronous self-study. Submission & acceptance of written assignments. 9 hrs of Observation assignment, its submission & acceptance; 12 hrs of Practical Engagement . Making of Montessori materials & their acceptance.

Course Content

General introduction to Montessori Theory & Education – Human Tendencies & Four Planes of Development. The Absorbent Mind & the Sensitive Periods. The Child as a Sensorial Learner. Role of the lead adult and assistant. Role of the prepared environment. Importance of Observation. Importance & Role of Order. Coordination & Refinement of Movement. Refinement of Language. Social Development & Social Cohesion. Development of Independence. Freedom & Discipline; Development of Will Supporting functional independence of the child. Activities in spoken language; grace & courtesy; music & art . Maintaining indoor & outdoor environment. Materials – making & maintenance. Practice of observation & offering activities.

The fee once paid, is non-refundable either before commencement of the course or on withdrawal of the participant during the course. A Refund Policy Acceptance is required to be submitted at the time of payment of fee.

Orientation Course – Suitable for parents, teachers,
administrators, caregivers and anyone else interested in
understanding and supporting the development of 3-6 year old
children.
Assistants Adjunct Course – Those who have completed the AMI
Primary Orientation Course are eligible. Completion of this course
enables individuals to work as an Assistant in a 3-6 Montessori
classroom.
